Shears Yard is a gem of a restaurant serving beautifully presented seasonal dishes. We headed to the Wharf Street restaurant, just off Call Lane, for dinner and were blown away by everything! This contemporary yet relaxed restaurant is a fab place to meet, eat and socialise.
Not only is the food delicious but the service is second to none and the decor is breathtaking, with exposed red brick walls, large wooden beams and loads of spot lights. Just have a look at the restaurant...

The standard menu is simple and seasonal, changing regularly as the availability of local produce changes. We went for dinner at Shears Yard and were amazed at the beautifully presented dishes that boasted both classic flavours and more unusual flavour combinations. As soon as we sat down we were served warm homemade bread - which we welcomed and devoured as we decided what to order.
To start we opted for the hoi sin glazed pork belly pancake, with kimchi, crunchy wasabi peas and a smoky sesame crumb. The pork melted in the mouth and was perfectly seasoned, the pancake was thin and crispy and the crunchy wasabi peas added a fab finishing crunch. The pancake was also topped with fresh cucumber and herbs which brought a welcome freshness to the dish. We both thought it would have been good to have a bit of a dipping sauce to bring everything together (maybe some teriyaki sauce or wasabi mayonnaise), but even without that, we thoroughly enjoyed this dish.

For mains, we had 6 dishes to choose between. Two meat, two fish, one veggie and one vegan dish - so something for everyone! We opted for the lamb rump dish. The lamb was glazed with ponzu and koji, and was served with large roasted carrots, charred full spring onions, and a carrot and miso puree which brought a really nice savoury flavour to the dish. The lamb was perfectly cooked and the flavours balanced really well, without overpowering the meat. We ordered some chunky chips with the dish and loved their homemade look, and fluffy interior. The accompanying roast garlic aioli was superb and went really well with the chips and the lamb!
We also opted to try the pan fried sea trout dish (which had a deliciously crispy skin), and was served with a rich green olive puree, char-grilled courgette slices, basil, and really interesting crispy smoked salmon arancini. The dish was finished with pea shoots which not only made the dish look superbly colourful but also added some extra freshness. We loved the moist fish which was cooked perfectly and just fell apart, and the arancini balls which stayed crispy throughout the meal.

To finish off our meal we opted for a fruity dessert. The coconut, almond panna cotta with mango, frozen raspberries and smoked almond brittle was simply divine (and just so happened to be vegan!) The fresh fruity flavours finished off our meal perfectly. We both loved the crunchy almond brittle which reminded us of nut butter. The panna cotta itself was creamy and kept some wobble - just how we like it.

We are already planning our next trip to Shears Yard and are particularly keen to try out their bottomless brunch which is served on Saturday mornings and includes dishes such as smoked streaky bacon, eggs and onion chutney on toasted ciabatta with glazed cheese sauce - yum!! This brunch is certainly one to put on your list too since it was recently voted as one of the best in the UK by the Telegraph! 🥂
And, if that isn't enough to tempt you, then why not just head over for drinks? We are certainly hoping for warmer weather so that we can go and just get some drinks and nibbles and enjoy ourselves in the Shears Yard garden - just check it out...
