A'roma brings a taste of Rome to the streets of york

Writer: Leeds Food GuideLeeds Food Guide

A'Roma Pasta Bar was opened by long-time friends Alessandro Venturi and Robin George. The pasta bar is open everyday on Silver Street, next to Shambles Market in York, and serves a small but perfectly formed selection of classic Roman dishes. We were invited to try a sample of the menu today, and loved every morsel.

The food truck was fitted out and painted by Alessandro and Robin (with the help of their friends). It now serves as their full time kitchen, and is where they prepare everything - including their biscuits, homemade sourdough for bruchetta and all of their fresh pasta.

We were really amazed when they told us that everything is made in the truck, and couldn't believe it when they started to make pasta in the street. We were excited for a truly authentic Italian experience!

Today we tried their special fresh egg-less pasta dish which was served with a tomato and meat sauce. The pasta used for this dish (called Stozzapreti) was unlike any pasta we have eaten before. It was twisted, soft and held the sauce so well. The crispy chunks of meat added a lovely crunch to the dish, and the generous sprinkling of cheese not only seasoned the dish but also added a creamy flavour. Absolutely delicious.

We also tried one of the chefs favourite pasta dishes 'Cacio e Pepe' which was pasta served with a cheese and black pepper sauce which was so rich and creamy. We were told that the sauce was made using only cheese and black pepper - both of which you could taste so well. The pasta itself was al dente - just how it should be cooked, and the shape of the pasta meant that we could get a load of sauce in each piece of pasta before devouring it. We really loved this dish, but for me it was a little too rich considering its size - not an issue when sharing it though!

Alongside the pasta we enjoyed their simple bruschetta, made using their homemade sourdough, a brush of garlic and a drizzle of authentic olive oil - it was incredible, and was ideal for moping up leftover sauce.

We finished the meal off the Roman way with strong coffee (brewed freshly in the van using a traditional cafetiere) and a spiced, super crunchy biscuit (called a Cambelline al Vino) to dip in it. I'm not even a big fan of coffee, but i enjoyed it today - especially with the biscuit, and it was a fab way to finish off our Italian lunch experience.

We absolutely loved our al fresco lunch, and will certainly be coming back to A'Roma Pasta Bar next time we are in York. We would highly encourage you to try it out too. It truly is a little piece of Italy in the heart of York.

A'Roma Pasta Bar is open everyday from 10-5pm. When you go along, let us know what you think! Be sure to share your photos on Instagram, tagging us (Leeds Food Guide) and A'Roma Pasta Bar when you do.
