We were invited to try the new autumn/ winter menu at Blackhouse, Grill on The Square and were not disappointed. Although the restaurant is probably best well known for its grilled meats and cocktails, we found out that the restaurant has a varied menu, suitable for all diners.
In addition to the food, the dining area is very well decorated. It had an uber cool yet calm feel, with private booths and large tables. There was also a private conservatory area, which is a fabulous celebratory space, complete with fairy lights. We were lucky enough to have the whole conservatory space for ourselves!

As we were eating with a number of others, we ordered a selection of starters to share. The dishes included beef brisket pasty (probably the favourite starter of the night), a baked cauliflower cheese souffle (which had all the flavours of traditional cauliflower cheese but the lightness of a souffle - very clever), blackened fish tacos, and a platter of hummus with crispbread and crudité. In addition to those dishes, we also tried the peppered lemon calamari served with a creamy dipping sauce. I think that was my favourite plate as the calamari was crispy and well seasoned, whilst the sauce was light and fresh. Check out the starter selection below!

For mains, we ordered individually. I ordered the chargrilled swordfish with pico de gallo and fries, which a number of others also opted for. I enjoyed the dish. The fish was well cooked, and the pico de gallo was a nice accompaniment. However, I think rice could have been a better side for the spicy fish dish.
As a Leeds Food Guide team, we also ordered the cottage pie - which was probably the stand out dish of the night.
The root vegetable mash was cheesy, packed with flavour and had an incredibly crispy topping - so good. Then, you got to the meat, which had been slow-cooked and just melted in the mouth. We are sure that the cottage pie will go down a storm on the new Blackhouse menu. You can see a selection of the main course dishes below.

A selection of sides were served with our mains. As a veg fan, I enjoyed the broccoli and cabbage with bacon, but the onion rings were fabulously crispy and the fries were great for mopping up the pie juices.
We had a fab evening at Blackhouse. Not only was the food delicious, but the restaurant itself is cosy and calm. We thought it would make a great spot for a relaxing meal or date night treat. I am already looking forward to my next visit, especially as the Blackhouse Sunday roast looks phenomenal, and their desserts look epic.
