Prashad: 7 course tasting menu

Writer: Leeds Food GuideLeeds Food Guide

Prashad is an incredible vegetarian restaurant serving delicious authentic North West Indian cuisine. We visited last night and tried out their 7 course tasting menu.

On arrival we were greeted with a complementary amuse bouche- a spoonful of deliciousness.

Dill and beetroot bite

Course 1: Open coconut and pea vegetable samosa with beetroot - lightly spiced, fresh and crunchy. It was also fun to eat! A brilliant start to the meal.

Course 2: Lasan Paneer Tikka- this was a lightly spiced stack of marinated, tandoori paneer (Indian cheese) with roasted vegetables. The stack was served with a creamy rocket sauce and a curried basil dip. The cheese was delicious- crispy on the outside and soft, and well seasoned inside.

Course 3: Pattra - marinated, grilled seasonal leaf parcels, with cabbage slaw. An unusual dish which we really enjoyed. I particularly liked the fresh slaw, but the combination of flavours and textures on the dish went perfectly together, and complimented each other.

Course 4: Bhel - A tangy snack of puffed rice, chopped tomatoes and red onions, drizzled with a sweet & sour tamarind sauce and garnished with fresh sour mango. This again was pretty unusual for our western pallets. The combination of sweetness from the sauce, and the crispy rice mix, reminded us of breakfast- think rice crispies, however after a few mouthfuls we realised the complexity of the dish and enjoyed the layers of flavours and textures. The fresh guava on top was a fab fresh touch.

Pomegranate and mint mocktail

Course 5: Masala Dosa - a lentil & rice flour crepe with a spiced potato & onion curry, served with lentil broth and coconut chutney. At this point we were already pretty full, but when this dish was placed in front of us, we found a renewed hunger. The lightly spiced soup, with potato stack, and the fresh coconut chutney were perfectly combined. The crispy dosa was brilliant for dipping into the dish. A great main course.

Course 6: Mattar Paneer - Paneer, peas & black cardamom curry with rice and mini naan bread. This was main course number 2. We thought it may have been better to serve this dish earlier on in the meal as we struggled to finish it. However, we loved the curry flavours, and the soft paneer. The naan breads were ideal for dipping into the sauce, and the rice was fluffy and delicious.

Course 7: Dessert! Gujlawa- GUJarati bakLAWA. Dessert was beautifully presented. The nutmeg spiced ice cream reminded us of the flavours of rice pudding, and the crunchy honeycomb underneath added a brilliant added texture. The backlava was filled with spiced nuts, and the sweet fruit compote helped to bring everything together- Yum.

The above gallery shows all of the dishes that we enjoyed. Images are in the order that they were served. Course 1 is top left, with course 7 at bottom right.

Prashad has more to offer than its incredible tasting menu. You can head to Prashad for an A La Carte meal, or pick one of their set menus. Just take a look at some of the dishes on offer in the image from their website below:
