Meat liquor

Writer: Leeds Food GuideLeeds Food Guide

We spent our Sunday evening at MEATliquor, eating incredible food, playing darts and chatting to some of the nicest staff we have ever come across. MEATliquor started life as a burger van in London but success meant that restaurants were not far down the line. The first MEATliquor restaurant opened in London in 2011, and since then MEATliquor has opened a number of other restaurants across London, Brighton and now in Leeds!

We started our meal with a selection of starters and sides: fried pickles with blue cheese dip - these were surprisingly delicious. With a well balanced combination of sweet, salty and sour, a crispy outside and a soft yet crunchy inside - these cannot be missed; deep fried macaroni bites - just what is says on the tin - think soft, cheesy pasta encased in a crispy coating and dipped into a pizza base style sauce - yum!; and monkey fingers - lightly battered fillets of moist chicken breast thinly sliced and bathed in slightly spicy buffalo sauce - finger licking good, especially when dipped into the MEATliquor blue cheese sauce!

Up next came the seriously tasty MEATliquor burgers... and when we say tasty we mean literally some of the best burgers that we have ever eaten! We asked for recommendations and we were told to try the 'Dead Hippie' - two mustard-fried 100% beef patties (sourced from the Scottish highlands), cooked medium rare, with lashings of dead hippie sauce, crunchy lettuce, melted cheese, crunchy pickles and finely diced white onions, all nestled inside a soft brioche bun. We were struggling to think of how this could be improved - perhaps a slice of crisp bacon ? This is not to be missed.

Because we are always keen to see what vegan and vegetarian friendly food predominantly meat restaurants serve we opted to try the MEATliquor 'Burgaloo'. This house made vegan beetroot, black bean and potato patty was lightly spiced, with a soft interior and a crunchy coating. The burger was served with fresh pickles, classic salads and a delectable onion and ketchup mayo. This burger was seriously good - and I would say would satisfy even the biggest meat lovers!

Although we were already pretty full following our starters and mains, we couldn't say no to testing out MEATliquor shakes, or their house favorite - 'Filth pie'. We got up close and personal with the Filth pie - look at the crunchy coconut biscuit base, the bruleed marshmallow topping, and the oreo crunches. Served with vanilla ice cream this dessert is certainly one for those with a sweet tooth! We loved the combination of flavors and thought it was an ideal end to our meal. We also thought it went perfectly with the shakes (described below!)

One Malteser shake and one salted caramel shake - both rich, creamy and delicious. The maltester shake had an incredibly malty taste (think a bit like Horlicks), but thanks to the Maltester chocolate coating, this shake also had a yummy chocolate flavour. The salted caramel shake was sweet, but thanks to the salty edge, it wasn't too crazy! We loved both the shakes, but weren't able to finish them :( We can't wait to go back to MEATliquor to enjoy them again - perhaps as a fab afternoon treat.

The food and drink at MEATliquor is carefully created, and served with a smile. This video (from the MEATliquor website) just shows you why MEATliquor is so special - handmade burgers, well balanced sauces and passion - what more could you want?

MEATliquor is located in the Trinity Center, but can also be accessed from Bank Street. With seriously good food and drink, and games galore (think Mario-kart, Tetras, Guitar Hero...) MEATliquor could become your go to place to meet friends old and new.

What is even better is that you can get a £10 lunch deal Monday to Friday at MEATliquor- so you really have no excuse!
