La Taberna is a family run restaurant sharing proper Spanish tapas. Located in a taverna style basement on York Place in the business district of Leeds, this special eatery is slightly off the beaten track, but it is not to be missed. We visited La Taberna with Stephen (from the gentleman's lifestyle site 'You Look Great Sir') and together we enjoyed a selection of tapas dishes.
We asked Guido and Vivi, the passionate owners of this special Spanish restaurant, what they would recommend, and they immediately started describing all of the incredible dishes that they had so obviously taken so much care and love to create. We opted for their best sellers and a couple of dishes that we were intrigued by.
Vivi was adamant that we try her chorizo and patas bravas combo, since the flavor development had taken her over 6 months, and she considered these dishes as her baby. We are so glad that we ordered them. The potatoes were incredible- fluffy on the inside, with crunchy outsides, and the brava sauce was a brilliant combination of sweet, spice, and rich tomato.
Aubergine fritters with cinnamon honey was a dish that I was intrigued to try. I was a little dubious about the combination of aubergine and sweet honey, but it worked so well. The fritters were super crispy, and slightly salty and the sweet honey dressing balanced the dish perfectly. I could have eaten another plate of these!

We also tried the bubbling garlic prawns, which are always a must for me in a tapas restaurant. The prawns were juicy, and well seasoned. I was glad not to have to unpeel the prawns too as that can be a messy job. I even enjoyed the garlicky oil which was ideal for dipping some bread into!

Other incredible dishes included a juicy steak served with a plantain mash and crispy calamari with apple aoli- and they were both delicious too. You will have to look out for photos of these on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.
You can enjoy the delicious tapas dishes on offer at La Taberna between 5:30 and 9pm Tuesday- Saturday. Let us know what you think!
