Saturday night dinner at the ever popular Heaney and Mill in Headingley to celebrate Mothers day. A meal of ups and down - We loved the steak and scallops but were dissapointed by the burger, and desserts. But we will be back as the service is fab and we have had great meal in the past - looking forward to trying the menu in the summer.
Homemade bread with seaweed butter - a complimentary morsel to start the meal. We didn't realize that this was complimentary until the end of the evening, and were a little shocked at the size of this especially as we had already ordered bread. Also, we weren't really sure about the presentation- the stone aspect was a bit odd, and I felt that the seaweed butter was also a bit sweet, but the bread was tasty and well seasoned. An interesting start to our dinner.

Scallops with hazelnut and white chocolate crumb with vegetable crisps - this was on the starter menu, and looked divine. I decided to order it as a main with some extra vegetables and bread. I was not dissapointed. The scallops were perfectly cooked and the flavour combination was superb. I really enjoyed the contrast of the soft scallop with the crunchy hazelnut topping. Absolutely delicious.

Rump steak from the specials menu - what can we say? This dish was delicious. The steak, which we ordered medium rare, was cooked to perfection. The chips, which were fat, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside were also incredible- perfect as a side and also for dipping into the peppercorn sauce. Even the veg was cooked just the way we like it and seasoned just right. The portion was also ideal. Would thoroughly recommend this steak!

Burger with bacon, macaroni cheese and fries - this dish sounded fantastic, and looked great. The macaroni patty was interesting, well seasoned and super cheesy- a great addition to the burger. But, the burger was pretty dry and needed some more sauce, perhaps an onion marmalade or similar. The meat was also dry- perhaps because it had been cooked until the cheese had melted, not ideal. We will not be ordering this dish again, and wouldn't recommend it, especially as it is priced at £16.

When we saw Lemon baked Alaska on the menu we were so excited to try it! But unfortunately we weren't blown away. The lemon flavour was fab, the crunch on the meringue topping, and the well cooked biscuit base were also ideal. But, like the burger the actual dessert was dry. I think this was mainly due to the fact that the cake to ice cream ratio was not good- with too much cake and not enough ice cream. An extra scoop inside would have done the trick, and we also would have loved a layer of lemon curd.

Rhubarb fondant souffle with tonka bean ice cream was another dessert that we were excited to try. We were intrigued by the fondant aspect and were looking forward to a chocolate melt in the middle souffle. However, when the dessert arrived and we dipped our spoons in to the well risen souffle we were again dissapointed. The souffle was thick, lacking in fluffiness and it was also very rich. The tonka bean ice cream was really creamy and very tasty however, an interesting chocolate hazelnut flavour. We think that a smaller souffle with a dark chocolate sauce would have been much better, we would also have loved some crunch- perhaps from a shortbread biscuit, or some crumbled nuts.

Overall we had a lovely evening at Heaney and Mill and despite a couple of disappointing dishes we would still recommend this Headingley eatery, and we will certainly be back again soon to try the summer menu.
