Fika North: New Scandi Cafe in Far Headingley

Writer's picture: Leeds Food GuideLeeds Food Guide

Fika, is often translated from Swedish to mean 'a coffee and cake break'. Which sounds great, and, theoretically this translation is right, but fika is actually much more than that. In Sweden, Fika is a state of mind, an attitude and an important part of the culture. So much so, that many consider it essential to make time for fika every day. After visiting the newly opened cafe, of the same name, we would argue that a trip to Fika North we can see why 'a coffee and cake break' should be a daily ritual.

The scandi cafe is located in Far Headingley, nestled between Sebby's and the Fishermans Wife. It has a cool, clean vibe but is still cosy, with comfy chairs and outdoor seating. We loved that every table had a couple of plugs, making Fika North a likely hot spot for those wanting a place to work away from the office.

In addition to a great vibe, Fika North offers a selection of food and drink that is hard to beat. With fresh pastries from Cawa Bakery, a range of teas and coffees (with beans from fab local roasters Maude coffee), and a selection of homemade cakes - including vegan and gluten free options, we couldn't find much not to love about Fika North.

As an added bonus, the staff were amazing. The owner was chatty and passionate about the cafe, and the comfort of customers, and the barista was well trained and produced beautiful mugs of steaming coffee.

We loved the Cawa bakery cronut, with sugary layers of fine pastry, and filled with sweet sticky jam. Just look at it - a real treat!

In any self respecting scandi cafe serving sweets, a cinnamon roll is a must. So we just had to try one, and we are so glad that we did! The roll was heady in cinnamon flavour, and the layers of dough were rich, buttery and delicious.

We really cannot recommend this new cafe enough, and we are sure it will continue to go from strength to strength. We are excited to try some of their savour offerings, but for now are really keen to head back and try some more of their delicious coffee, cakes and bakes!

Fika North sounds like a wonderful spot to slow down and enjoy the moment! A daily coffee and cake break is definitely a tradition I can get behind. I’d love to visit and sip on a smooth Nicaragua coffee while embracing the cozy Scandi vibes. ☕🍰 #FikaTime
